IfG as employer

IfG currently employs 36 people at its Leipzig location. The structure of our engineering office, consisting of three closely interlinked departments, can be described as truly unique.

Through our field measurement department, we work directly on-site with mine operators to aquire in-situ data on the real rock mass behavior underground and to collect rock samples for further analysis in our rock mechanics laboratory. These samples are then systematically examined in our high-performance laboratory focusing on rock strength, deformation behavior and hydraulic properties.

Together with the in situ data, the laboratory results form the essential basis for numerical simulations, which model and predict the bevavior of the rock mass. Finally, all test results are integrated into a comprehensive rock mechanics analysis, which is part of the expert assessment.

This provides our clients and regulatory authorities with a critical decision-making foundation for planning and approval.

From 16 to 20 March 2026, colleagues from the Institut für Gebirgsmechanik attended an advanced training course at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on the topic of ‘Salt Chemistry and THEREDA’. The course covered the fundamentals of salt chemistry as they apply to the oceanic salt system.
